Probing behavior and density of Monelliopsis pecanis, Monellia caryella, and Melanocallis caryaefoliae (Homoptera: Aphididae) on pecan cultivars
Journal of Economic Entomology 87 (4), 951-956
Abstract: The probing behavior and density of three aphids, Monelliopsis pecanis Bissell, Monellia caryella (Fitch), and Melanocallis caryaefoliae (Davis), were studied on 10 pecan cultivars. In a laboratory study, the three aphid species differed in their preference of probing sites on pecan leaflets, as indicated by the number of probes on each site. Pecan aphids showed varying degrees of preference for pecan cultivars. The results of probing behavior were largely consistent with observed aphid densities under field conditions. Because of high population levels and long probing durations of both species, 'Shoshoni', 'Cheyenne', and 'Tejas' were considered highly preferred by M. caryella and M. pecanis; 'Oconee', 'Shoshoni', 'Cheyenne', and, 'Gloria Grande' were the most preferred cultivars by M. caryaefoliae. 'Pawnee' followed by 'Cape Fear' were considered the least preferred by the three aphid species as demonstrated by low infestation levels, high number of probes per observation period, and long nonprobing durations. The three aphid species showed less degree of nonpreference for 'Kiowa', 'Western Schley', and the selection 61-6-67 than for 'Pawnee' and 'Cape Fear'. A cultivar preferred by one aphid species was not necessarily preferred by another aphid species.
